Putting on the Spirit Review and Giveaway

Putting on the Spirit

“Putting On the Spirit” is a wonderful and quick devotion that a busy mom can handle. We moms, have enough on our plate and fitting God in there somewhere is hard. Well Katie Hornor made it easy. 10 simple minutes a day. Surely we can find the time for that right? I know for me, when I rise up in the morning, it is the best time for me. It is on my Kindle, so that makes it very easy to read it while I am waiting for the morning light to come across the sky. Or, while I am waiting for a kid to come out of the shower. Or, I fit it in while I am making breakfast. 10 minutes ladies.

Katie used the KJV, which for ME, that is important due to my personal convictions. It is pretty hard out there to find a devotion using only the KJV. So, this has been right up my alley.
Katie takes us right through the Fruits of the Spirit that brings about Godliness in us moms. Love, Joy, Peace, long-suffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness and lastly, Temprence.
I have been struggling a lot with my faith and struggling with fitting time in for God each day. This devotion has helped me get back into my groove so to speak.
Katie said it very well in her introductions,

I know I should be putting on the Spirit instead of robbing myself in the cape of my own strength, but I just don’t have the time”.

One of my favorite quotes from the Putting on the Spirit devotional is this,

When we choose to maintain a right attitude and to recognize God as the strength giving God of our present circumstances, and when we recognize that he lovingly arranged this circumstance so that he can walk with us through it, that realization brings joy.

It is an answer to a question that was posed in Putting on Joy Day 6,  There is joy in weakness. The question is, How can we find joy in being weak?

Another day that blessed me is day 15, where Katie talks about Goodness. A statement she used was, Being right does not equal being good. Profound huh, it was for me too. Often times, I sit at my computer listening to a conversation on the phone, or I read something on Facebook, or I am in a store and I see these moms that are so patient, so gentle, so into their children. I feel like I am not at all a good mom. I have made a ton of mistakes with raising my children. I have been way too harsh where gentleness needed to be there. Or, because we allowed a certain thing in our home, my children are glued to it. I compare myself to other moms. You do it too I am sure, right? A good mom does not stumble with her children. She does not yell etc. right? Well, we do know those are the lies of Satan.

I won’t go into too many more details as I want you to go and buy her book.
You can find her book, here, on Amazon. After buying her e-book, you can go to her website here, and grab the free workbook that goes along with it. It is a pdf that you can print out to use as you go through the devotional. You can also find the Spanish version here.
A bit about Katie, from her website;

I imagine myself to be the proud owner of a pet elephant who paints, and a librarian of a ginormous library, see the ones that inspire me here!

But in real life, I am daughter by adoption to the King of Heaven and the best friend, traveling and learning companion, and lover to my missionary husband, Hero, since 2003.

I am also mother, cook, story teller, housecleaner, nurse, cuddler and teacher to four wonderful children whom we call TazSirFlower &Butterfly (Read what I love about each of them). AND we have a Baby on the way!

Katie is so super sweet and you can find her at any one or all of these places below:

The Hills are Alive, With the Sound of Music

I am super excited about the new Sound of Music that is coming to NBC this Thursday, December 5th. The time is 7pm CST or 8pm EST.

Now, I know, it will not be the same without Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain Von Trapp. Who can forget the witty Richard Haydn as Max Detweiler? The cast for the 1965 movie was just so timeless. I mean, we watch it every year. I plan on watching it again, before Thursday. It will be hard to not compare the two.

Sound of Music

However, we will be watching. I am interested to see how Carrie Underwood is going to fill the shoes that Julie Andrews left. Carrie Underwood is a phenomenal singer. She is beautiful. What about Stephen Moyer as the Captain? That will he a hard role to fill as well.
When thinking about The Sound of Music, most of us are not thinking about the Broadway play. We are thinking about the film. This is not a remake of the movie. This is a live-viewing of the Broadway play. So, maybe comparing them won’t have to happen.:) Watching the video on the NBC site has shed a preview of what is to come. It is so exciting to see that they included the casting of the Von Trapp children.

This is LIVE, if a mistake happens, they have to just keep going. How scary is that? I remember being in a play once. It was so hard to be that tree. I moved my arm and smacked the tree next to me and made him cry. IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. How embarrassing for him!

About this Live Viewing:

From executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (“Smash,” “Hairspray,” “Chicago”) comes an instant holiday classic: “The Sound of Music,” based on the original Broadway musical. Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer star as Maria and Captain von Trapp in this beloved story of the young novice who falls in love with Captain von Trapp and his seven children, set against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Austria. The jewel in the Rodgers and Hammerstein crown, “The Sound of Music” contains some of the most famous songs ever written for the stage, including “The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “Climb Every Mountain” and “Edelweiss.”

This new version of “The Sound of Music” will be a faithful adaptation of the original stage musical, to retell the story for a whole new generation. And more than that, it will be broadcast LIVE, adding a whole new level of immediacy and excitement. Get ready to reintroduce your family to the most joyful, most emotional and most musical family adventure of them all. Three-hour live event.

The Sound of Music

So, are you going to tune in? If so, let me know in the comments! Also, during the viewing, there is a twitter party going on! using hash tags #faithandfamily and #SoundofMusic to follow along with some of us that are using those hashtags!

I cannot wait to watch!

The Promise – A Review and a GIVEAWAY!

banner

The Promise is a beautiful movie. We got the movie in the mail today to review and right away after lunch chores were over, we put on the movie. It is a musical. There is a lot of singing, but not overly so. There was just the right amount of both speaking and singing parts.

It is a 45 minute film. It was “just” about the birth of Christ. One thing we had somewhat an issue for. We thought the movie should have lasted longer. However, with that said, here is the synopsis of the movie that you can find on their website.

In ancient Israel, during the days of King Herod, a young couple’s world is turned upside down when the prophecy of a long-awaited deliverer unfolds upon their lives. They must trust in God’s promise in the midst of rising challenges, and their faithfulness is rewarded as they witness the most surprising and glorious event of all human history – the promise fulfilled in the birth of the Messiah.

You can see the trailer here.

The writers did a tremendous job of writing the storyline. We went through the Book of Luke today after the movie viewing to double-check that it went through it correctly and it does. Very true to the story. Which to me, is a great thing. Too many films out there add items that are not true.
My favorite part has to be when Joseph starts to see Mary as his bride. He notices that she is no longer “little Mary”.

The music is just beautiful. Well written and goes along with the story. It also is biblically sound. My favorite song has to be Lullaby for the King and His Name is John. However, all the music is just wonderful.
My 17-year-old LOVES the movie. He says, it is so nice that it brings the truth out there about Jesus’s birth.

The animation was done wonderfully. The animators used Motion Captioning and 3-D animation. Truly great stuff. Almost like what you would see from the Major Motion Picture folks. The musical had us captivated through out each of the scenes.  The only problem my daughter had with the animation is that she though their facial features were weird. Eyes to set close to each other and very long noses.

You can find more information about the film in the following links.

If you are looking for a safe and biblically sound video for your children, The Promise is both. It is very captivating. From my youngest in the house that is 18 months old, to my 18-year-old. We all enjoyed the film. We can not wait to see what more Glorious Films will bring out in the future.

Review: Kroger Skillet Meals and Sides

I was sent a coupon for a free Kroger Skillet Meal, a free loaf of Kroger Garlic Bread, and a free Fresh Selections salad kit to try out as well as to review as I am a member of Bzzagent.  Today we bought the above.Bzzagent also sent extra coupons for $1.00 off a loaf of garlic bread as well as $1.00 off of a Kroger Skillet meal. We choose the Sorrento-style Gnocchi with Mozzarella Cheese and Pomodoro Sauce. We also choose the Kroger Fresh Selections Caesar Salad Kit.

It was pretty easy to make up. So perfect for a busy family. Just pour the contents from the bag into the skillet. Set the skillet to medium heat and just stir for 8-10 minutes. Throw the garlic bread into the oven to warm up. Throw the salad into a bowl and you are set to go. So within about 15 minutes tops you have a quick and easy meal. Church that night? Throw the meal on the stove and eat before you go. Or, in a hurry and can’t fix dinner before you go? It is so quick you can do it when you get home while kids are getting their showers in.

Kroger Skillet Meal, Garlic Bread, Salad

Two of my four children did not like the Gnocchi. The other two did and asked for more. The salad was a hit as well as the garlic bread. I liked the Gnocchi. It would not be something I would buy again, but would learn to make homemade. The Kroger Skillet meal does not taste homemade. It tastes like it came from a can. But would be nice to have a couple in the freezer for a quick throw together. My kids also all know how to cook and read directions. So, it would be easy for one of them to follow the directions and make up a quick meal.

In conclusion,  this was a quick and easy meal. It tasted pretty good. There is not a great selection of what to choose from. The skillet meals in the frozen food section are kind of weird variations and this was the only meal that sounded tasty. However, that said, I would probably will not buy the Kroger Skillet Meals again. I would however do the garlic bread and the salad kit. We enjoyed those very much.

Review: Saving Memories Forever

First of all, I have to admit, this was hard for me. I am a photographer by nature so I record my memories by photo. And I guess I hope that I will remember who is in the photo, or what the place was that we went to, and what we were doing.

I said all of that to say, I was picked to review Saving Memories Forever. It is a GREAT concept and would be perfect for someone who picks up that tape deck to record what just happened, or what is now a digital recorder. It would be great for someone who might be sick and want their young children to hear their voice. Someone who is maybe auditory. I am not. I have to visualize things.

Saving Memories Forever is easy to use. You can use it on your phone, at least if you have an Android or an Apple phone. Or, if you do not have a smart phone and you can go right to their website and save your memories from there.

Best Method: Saving Memories Forever Smartphone Apps: The iPhone and Android apps lead you through the recording process and provide you with a list of questions which are helpful when interviewing relatives. When finished with the recording, press the Upload Button and your story will upload to the Saving Memories Forever website. See the Quick Start Guide for the iPhone and Android apps below.

Alternate Method: Saving Memories Forever Website

*  To record and upload stories directly from your computer, your

stories need to be recorded in an MP3 format. Please refer to our

Quick Start Guide listed below.

*  Use Saving Memories Forever Online User Manual which goes

beyond the basics to describe the features of the program in detail.

Please refer to our User Manual listed below.

*  Use our list of questions. See the Suggested Questions links

below. These questions match those we have provided on the

Saving Memories Forever smartphone apps. Using these questions

ensures that you will follow the organizational practices that

Saving Memories Forever recommends. Don’t worry, you can

always ask your own questions when recording.

Basically, you just talk into your phone, tell a story of what you were doing, what you have done in the past, what you want someone to remember your for. A story you would include might be the birth stories of your children, when they fell and cracked their head open and needed 30 stitches on their head the day you were to have a funeral for your mom. ( cue Jonah).

Saving Memories Forever have 2 ways of how you can do it. You can do it for free, and they have a monthly access way. Still quite affordable at $3.99 a month. You can find out what the differences are here.

Saving Memories Forever has been found in Home School Enrichment Magazine, as well as popular bloggers out there.

All in all, it is a great program. It is just not something I will use to save my memories.
I think the company says it all right here….
“Saving Memories Forever helps families record, save, and share family memories “one story at a time”.
